Wow, Nickelodeon. You really upped your game after the last TV show, huh?
But no, seriously. I know it’s been out for a while, but I finally got around to watching the Max & the Midknights television series that premiered in October 2024, and I was genuinely shocked at how good it was! When it first came out, I was assuming that it was going to be of just about the same quality as the Big Nate television series: a subpar adaptation that only partially understands its characters with flawed original stories and unfunny bathroom humor. My first sign that Nickelodeon learned its lessons from that series was a person in the comment section of the Big Nate comic strip on GoComics.com stating that the Max & the Midknights television series was far better. And I could see why! This time around, the show closely follows the books, the characters are much more faithful to their book counterparts, and even the bathroom humor was toned down significantly, which was especially shocking (in a great way!) to see.
Unsurprisingly, there has been a lot less discussion on the series compared to even the Big Nate television series, which is why reviewing the show has been on my mind for a while now. There are also other things related to the show that’s worth covering as well, such as the shocking cancellation of the Big Nate television series and its infuriating removal from Paramount+, as well as the bittersweet end to the dailies of the Big Nate comic strip itself. Before we begin, I’d like to give a heads-up to obvious spoilers to the series. I also might as well mention that this post is about as long as my post about the Big Nate television series, so you’ve been warned of a particularly long medieval quest. Anyway, it’s time to pull out those swords and wands as we explore this (thankfully amazing) fulfillment of Max’s prophecy!
